A fun, fast read giving a general overview of monsters from history and myth. The focus is on the gorgeous artwork, not the text -- which is really quite skimpy. You certainly won't learn much about the folklore or the psychology behind monsters, but you'll get a kick out of seeing the fine variety of demons, ghouls, dragons, and other fantastic creatures as interpreted by Goya, Blake, and Aldrovandi.

Got this book in hardcover from British Museum yesterday, great read so far!

While this is not a hugely detailed book, it is beautifully illustrated showing examples and extracts from a variety of sources to take the reader through the various histories and forms of monsters, demons and animal/human hybrids that we have managed to come up with over the years. There is some text that gives a bit of background with a bit extra for the more famed examples, which is easy to read and feels more like a fireside chat over a cup of tea than anything else. This may not tell you e [...]

If you want a thorough resource about monsters and beasts, this book is not for you. Nevertheless, it is a great book for a general knowledge about the creatures of folk tales and myths combined with a humorous writing. It makes a great light reading for lazy times, the artwork in it of monsters, creatures and spirits is quite wonderful to have too. I'd highly recommend it if you are looking for a general overview and an easy read on the subject.

This was a fun, brief overview of monsters chocked full of references to seek for further reading (both serious and light-hearted) that go into more detail about the creatures mentioned as well as references to the 161 fantastic illustrations featured. I really appreciated the efforts made to not only talk about European monsters as Dell mentions creatures from such places as Mesopotamia, Japan, North America, and even Haiti.

the artwork is absolutely amazing, even though the content is rather superficial. the book is quite monstrous itself (with a scaly hard cover), which made me feel like i was reading harry potter's monster book of monsters.

An interesting insight into the boundless possibilities of human imagination and fear, packed full of high quality full page artworks from around the world and throughout time.

As others have said, the pictures are lovely but it's not really more than a picture book. Some very light text interstitially placed.

Although this is awesomely illustrated, the information was too general to be really interesting.

Very rubbish book on monsters. Only keeping this because of the artwork/artists that were included. The problem with this book is the author doesn't have time to go into detail on the history of these monsters, he also gets his facts/history/myths wrong on occasion (the demon part is all wrong, really). So not an ideal book if you want to know more about monsters, etc.Furthermore, rather then placing a caption near the image, you have to go to the end of the chapter to find out (and count, as lac [...]

I love learning about supernatural creatures (especially after watching Supernatural and learning about some of the more obscure ones). This is not aimed at children, yet the information in it is fairly light and introductory, while it is heavy on pictures and illustrations. The illustrations are interesting, but if you have read anything about supernatural creatures before, you will not learn anything new here. Of most interest to me were the references to Japanese supernatural creatures, of wh [...]

I got this because I heard a great interview with the author on the podcast "MonsterTalk." It definitely isn't what I was expecting, which soured my read early on, but once I got into the book I thoroughly enjoyed it. So, if your looking for an encyclopedia/in depth history/analysis of monsters this isn't the right book. BUT if your looking for a book like that you'd probably enjoy the hell out of this, which is light on reading but heavy on some really interesting pieces of historical art work [...]

Here's a good book to dig in for monster history. It's not a huge book, and do not have lots of ressources and text, mainly beautiful (and creepy - the best) illustrations picked from all over the world, and time to give us an idea of all kind of monsters people imagined through time. The paper is of quality and really does justice to the pieces of monster art represented. There definitely are some weird things, let me tell you.

Wonderful pictures, as Thames & Hudson books are known for. This was an impulse museum shop buy, and although the text is rather slim (an easy afternoon's read), the ideas are important and the images are great. I have more to say about this book on my blog: Sects and Violence in the Ancient World.

As I think everybody who took a look at this book has thought, it is a wonderful piece of art. It is beautiful to look at, the art and graphic are amazing. I'd give it 5 stars, but I didn't like how text and images were linked to each other. Still, I am glad I picked this book up! (Can we also say something the scaled texture of the cover??! A+)

    25. Olga on said:

well It was an interesting reading, although I hoped for much more information to be published. If you have some basic knowledge it won't be interesting for you, but printed fragments of various paintings ot other art connected with 'monsters' make this book worth picking.
